Connecting the airport
new railway and bridge
Opening of Airport Railway and Incheon Bridge
The Airport Railway was the first private investment project
in the history of Korea's railways, with a total project cost of
KRW 4.2184 trillion. This large-scale project involved building
a 61-km dual-track railway, installing 10 stations, and building
one train depot. The plan included the operation of express
trains with no stops and regular trains that stopped at every
station. Construction began in March 2001. However, due to
various issues faced by the private operators, construction was
delayed, and Phase 1 of the railway from Incheon Airport to
Gimpo Airport opened 2 years later than planned, in March
2007. After the completion of the Phase 2 construction project,
whose construction began earlier than planned in 2004, the
entire railway from Incheon Airport to Seoul Station was
finally opened in December 2010, marking the end of a 10-
year journey. The Incheon Airport Railway became a key
public transportation option, connecting Incheon Airport with
Seoul Station in just 43 minutes via express trains.
