Enabling faster and more accurate
Baggage Handling System (BHS)
The BHS was upgraded to become faster and more precise. The Phase 2 BHS
construction project involved expanding the system within Terminal 1, modifying
the existing BHS to integrate the systems between Phases 1 and 2, installing a new
baggage transportation system in the underground tunnel connecting Terminal 1
with Concourse, and building a new BHS within Concourse. The overall system
was more than 3 times larger than in Phase 1. With the construction of Concourse,
which required long-haul baggage transport, a high-speed tray system was
introduced. Each tray in this system is equipped with RFID tags, ensuring the
accurate delivery of passenger baggage. The system's maximum transport speed
is 7 m/s, significantly outperforming traditional belt conveyors, which operates at
1.5 m/s. Additionally, a centralized IT system, known as the Baggage Handling
Integrated Control System (BHICS), was implemented to intelligently manage
baggage. Facilities for processing early baggage for both transfer and departing
passengers were also significantly expanded. Integrating all these facilities into
a limited space was a tall order. However, through thorough design validation
and on-site inspections, the project team was able to establish an efficient layout
with optimized routes. Continuous adjustments during the commissioning period
ensured the seamless integration of the Phase 1 and 2 systems. As a result, after
the Phase 2 opening, Incheon Airport achieved the capacity to handle 12,600
departing bags, 10,800 transfer bags, and 33,120 arriving bags per hour.
