Leading the way Incheon Airport became the first airport in Asia to join the RE100 initiative in 2022, establishing
in greenhouse itself as an eco-friendly airport leading in greenhouse gas reduction. RE100 is a global campaign
aimed at sourcing 100% of electricity from renewable energy. Incheon Airport plans to transition
gas reduction as a all airport electricity to green energy by 2040. If it reduces greenhouse gas emissions, it will
“green airport” improve the air quality, creating a healthier environment for passengers and employees.
The extended Terminal 2 area is designed to utilize geothermal, solar, and natural light with
high energy efficiency, securing about 18% of power consumption from eco-friendly energy. It
installed solar generating facilities covering an area equivalent to fourteen soccer fields in places
including parking lots and rooftops.
It also tried to recycle construction waste from Phase 4 as high added-value resources to realize
the ESG value. It did not hire an external contractor to process 450,000 tons of construction waste
and tried to recycle the waste internally. It realized carbon reduction by planting 291,918 pine
trees a year with a life cycle of 60 years. It has a gradual plan to replace airside vehicles with eco-
friendly ones from 2020.
Incheon Airport expanded its hydrogen and electric charging infrastructure, establishing hydrogen
fueling stations near Terminal 1 in 2020 and
Terminal 2 in 2021. In September 2023,
Incheon Airport became the first airport
in Korea to achieve Level 4 certification
in the ACI Airport Carbon Accreditation
(ACA) program. The ACA is the only global
certification that assesses airports' carbon
reduction capabilities, and Level 4 represents
the highest and most challenging standard for
carbon emissions management.
