Enhancing navigational aids
Alongside the construction of Runway 4,
Incheon Airport expanded its navigational aids,
including instrument landing systems (ILS)
and airfield lighting (AFL). The ILS installed
on Incheon Airport’s runways provides crucial
data on landing angle and distance to ensure
safe landings, even in poor visibility conditions.
The system includes components such as
localizers, glide paths, and marker beacons,
which give pilots technical data several miles
before arrival, allowing for instrument-based
landings during fog and other adverse weather.
Incheon Airport operates its ILS at CAT III,
the highest ILS category, enabling landings
with a minimum visibility of 75 meters.
The airfield lighting system consists of
approach lights, runway lights and provides
visual information for aircraft to take off and
land safely. Notably, approximately 5,600
airfield lights were installed on Runway 4 to
meet CAT III operational requirements and
facilitate Field Taxi Guidance Systems (FTGs).
This installation included various innovations,
such as implementing independent drainage for
the lights and developing and introducing stop
positions for pilots, all aimed at ensuring the
timely opening of Runway 4 and enhancing
airport operational efficiency.
