The core task: The expansion of Terminal 2 was the centerpiece of the Phase 4 construction project. On
Terminal 2 November 19, 2019, a ground-breaking ceremony was held at the Terminal 2 construction site,
marking the start of this extensive work. Through Phase 4, the wing-shaped spaces on both the
expansion east and west sides of Terminal 2 were extended. This complex task involved demolishing the
end walls, installed at the far ends of Terminal 2 during Phase 3, and seamlessly attaching new
structures—a feat requiring immense precision, as active operations were taking place just 5-6
meters away in adjacent areas. The project included electrical, mechanical, and communication
work within an operating terminal, requiring meticulous planning to avoid passenger disruption
from noise or vibrations and to protect the interests of resident agencies and commercial facilities.
Construction was carried out mainly at night, with schedules carefully coordinated through
discussions with stakeholders.
As a result of the expansion, each wing of Terminal 2 was extended by 750 meters from 440
meters, adding 340,000 square meters of space—equivalent to 48 soccer fields. With an increased
capacity of 29 million passengers annually, Terminal 2’s total capacity rose from 23 million to
52 million. Combined with Terminal 1’s 54 million, Incheon Airport’s total passenger capacity
expanded from 77 million to 106 million. Incheon Airport became the world’s first airport to
operate two terminals each capable of handling over 50 million passengers annually.
