Redrawing the Incheon Airport embarked on its Phase 4 expansion just 11 months after the grand opening of
map of Incheon Phase 3, driven by the rapid growth in global aviation demand. Major airports worldwide were
competing fiercely to position themselves as leading global hubs. With facilities to accommodate
Airport 77 million passengers, Incheon Airport recognized that maintaining its status as a leading global
airport would become challenging in the face of the dynamic aviation market. Since its opening,
Incheon Airport had seen a rapid annual passenger growth rate of approximately 7.5%, and with
the rise of low-cost carriers (LCC), passenger demand was projected to exceed 100 million by
2030. The vision of becoming a mega-hub airport serving 100 million passengers was also a goal
initially set in 1992 when the new metropolitan airport plan was first conceived.
In response to this explosive demand, the ground-breaking ceremony for Incheon Airport’s Phase
4 construction project was held on December 20, 2018. With a total investment of KRW 4.84
trillion, the project involved expanding both wings of Terminal 2 and constructing Runway 4.
Additionally, the apron areas and connecting transportation networks were further expanded,
effectively redrawing the map of Incheon Airport.
