Although trial operations began in April 2017, preparing for the Phase 3 opening was challenging,
as it was the airport's first experience managing multiple terminals. Concerns mounted as several
new airport terminals around the world were experiencing operational failures during the same
period.
However, the airport's prior experience and expertise accumulated during Phases 1 and 2 proved
invaluable. On January 18, 2018, at 4:20 a.m., the successful grand opening of Phase 3 was
marked by the arrival of Korean Air flight KE624 from Manila, the Philippines. Phase 3, launched
in 2009, involved 93,000 personnel and a budget of KRW 4.57 trillion.
With the opening of Terminal 2, Incheon Airport ushered in a new era of multiple terminals for
international flights. The airport expanded its annual passenger handling capacity from Terminal
1’s 54 million to 77 million with Terminal 2’s additional capacity of 23 million, setting the stage
for its transformation into a mega hub airport.
