security screening zones to ease congestion and incorporated advanced
ICT technologies to enable smooth passenger boarding. Guide robots,
self-check-in, and self-bag-drop systems were installed, while aviation
security was enhanced with state-of-the-art circular scanners, adding to
the terminal’s smart functionalities.
With the construction of Terminal 2 and the expansion of the apron,
a second apron control tower was built to eliminate blind spots in air
traffic control. As a result, Incheon Airport now has a total of three
control towers.
Bus stops and airport railroad in one building
Transportation Center 2, with a total floor area of 135,000 square meters,
is an integrated transportation facility connected to Terminal 2. It houses
bus stops, the airport railroad, and other transportation services. Having
all these facilities within one building makes it easier for travelers to
reach the airport by bus or train, ensuring smooth connections between
different modes of public transportation within the airport.
An automated, unmanned shuttle train system was also implemented to
connect Terminal 1, the concourse, and Terminal 2. The shuttle train service,
initially introduced in Phase 2 between Terminal 1 and the concourse, was
extended to Terminal 2, significantly reducing transfer times for passengers
traveling through the large airport. Additionally, both the passenger and
cargo aprons were expanded to meet future aviation demand.
Laying the foundation for a mega hub airport
The Phase 3 construction project had to be completed by the end of
2017, ahead of the PyeongChang Winter Olympics. Any delays would
have risked losing Olympic visitors to competing airports in countries
like China and Japan.
