areas along existing connecting roads. As for green areas near the railroads of
the T1-T2 connecting road, IIAC planted trees in a patchwork form based on the
landscape masterplan.
Tree species were selected based on locality, scenery, function, and stability. In
particular, species with strong resistance to salt were selected given that Incheon
Airport is a seashore landfill. Retusa fringe trees were planted along the T1-T2
connecting road, while cyperaceae herbaceous flowers including imperata red
baron and pearl millets were planted, as they require less management. Trees
including birch and emerald gold were planted like those inside the airport.
Landscaping with themes: landscape work for landside area 2
The landscape work for landside area 2 included the Terminal 2 access road,
nearby green areas, rock structure near the interchange of the freight terminal,
southern access roads of Terminal 1, and roads near the Government Office
Complex. Work started in April 2023 and finished in December 2024. The
Terminal 2 access road is a gateway to Terminal 2 and the face of Incheon
Airport, which has an important meaning. This is why the landscape masterplan
was reflected, and the traditional patchwork pattern was applied. The planting
layout was designed with consideration for drivers' view, incorporating lateral
perspectives. Landscape simulations were conducted to ensure that viewers could
recognize the planting patterns as large-scale masses, allowing adjustments to the
planting axes for optimal visual impact.
It also created landscapes with various themes. A large-scale carbon reduction
wood in a patchwork pattern was created in the most conspicuous area of the
Terminal 2 ramp. The rock structure near the cargo terminal interchange received
the grand prize at the Korea Landscape Award in 2018. Night lights were installed
nearby as a giant floating “light island” near the airport. Considering the spatial
characteristic of rocks and sequence from the road, each zone had a different
production. A resting area at Sammok Port in connection with the Sammok Port
