Reflecting the beauty of nature
landscaping
ne w and r ene wabl e ener gy For modern airports, aesthetic factors are as important as functional ones. Airports
are social infrastructure as well as landmarks. This is why Phase 4 conducted
landscaping work to improve the airport’s scenery. IIAC analyzed the landscape
issues from the previous 3 stages and drew up a masterplan for Phase 4. It chose
the patchwork quilt as the motif considering tradition, awareness, variability, and
locality. Small cells of patchwork compose a formative design and enable a varied
landscape. Based on that, large spaces were secured on the landside.
The space was composed with 4 concepts considering Incheon Airport’s mid- and
long-term plan for culture and art. The idle site on the north and nearby connecting
roads were designated as “Relax-Play Field” to create a green field to offer resting
areas and fun activities. The southern side was designated as “Art-Field” for art
programs and “Culture-Field” for cultural activities. Hwamul IC and the beach
near Sammok Port were designated as “Seaside Park,” preserving the old image of
Yeongjong Island.

It was necessary to improve the landscape for new roads and organize existing idle
sites. IIAC confirmed the area and size for the landscaping of Phase 4’s landside
area and began construction in 2021. Area 1 included landscaping and plantation
for parking facilities and surrounding unused areas, as well as planting and scenic
enhancements along new sections of internal airport connecting roads and idle
