Providing more power: establishing power grid for Phase 4
It was mandatory to build power infrastructure in the northwestern area of
Yeongjong Island and expand the Incheon Airport’s power grid taking into
account the mid- and long-term development plan including the nearby areas. It
was decided that Main Substation C with 2 transformers would be built during
Phase 4 in addition to existing Main Substations A and B. The implementation
method was coordinated with KEPCO, the power provider. It was agreed that
KEPCO would be responsible for constructing and operating Main Substation C,
Eulwang Substation, and transmission lines, while IIAC would provide the site for
substation and transmission lines. The construction for Main Substation C started
in November 2020 and was completed in April 2023. The power grid was tripled
by completing the power provision system that connects the Main Substations
A, B, and C. This was an unprecedented achievement not only domestically but
also internationally. Incheon Airport secured the power supply capacity for future
development and removed the blackout risk by creating multiple transmission
systems. IIAC applied eco-friendly switch-gears on 25.8kV for substations for
extra-high voltage, improving the power efficiency by 15% and facility lifecycle
by more than 20%.
