Ensuring safe landings:
establishing instrument landing system for
Runway 4
The Instrument Landing System (ILS) is a wireless marking
to instruct aircraft of their vertical/horizontal location and
distance to the landing point, making sure aircraft land safely
in any weather conditions. ILS is composed of a localizer,
glide path, inner markers, middle markers, and outer markers.
It was required to satisfy all legal criteria before operations.
CAT-III was mandatory for normal operations of Runway 4.
It means that it should be possible to takeoffs and landings
in the southern and northern part of the runway even in low
visibility of 75 meters. The issue was frequency interference
from the aircraft on the taxiway of Runway 4.
To address the issue, an investigation of the external
electromagnetic environment was conducted to identify signal
blind spots. Precise adjustments to the equipment were made,
normalizing azimuth SDM signals. Additionally, abnormal
signals from the glide slope equipment were resolved through
antenna calibration. As a result, Runway 4 passed the ILS
CAT-III flight test in March 2021 and the flight test for the
flight lighting facility in April. On June 17, 2021, the operation
of Runway 4 successfully started.
