Introducing 3-dimensional
design technology (BIM) to
minimize interface conflicts
The Phase 3 construction project implemented various strategies to efficiently
manage interfaces between individual projects. In 2013, the airport introduced
building information modeling (BIM), a technology that combines construction
information into 3-dimensional models, allowing for more effective prevention
of potential conflicts and interface issues during construction. During the initial
stage of introduction IIAC identified areas likely to encounter interface conflicts
and created BIM data for these areas. This data was used to review potential
clashes between different project packages and actively support decision-making
regarding conflict resolution. Over the next 3 years, Incheon Airport systematically
developed and applied BIM technology, establishing a sustainable process that
included pre-construction reviews, project support, and the digitalization of
deliverables. This proactive approach allowed the airport to efficiently prevent
interface conflicts throughout the construction phase.
In recognition of these efforts, Incheon Airport received the Award from the
Minister of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport, the highest honor at the BIM
Competition in September 2016, highlighting its achievements to external
audiences. The BIM technology, first introduced during the Phase 3 project,
has since evolved into a core element of Incheon Airport construction process,
continuing its application into the Phase 4 project.
