Building an eco-friendly
airport for the earth
The aviation industry has higher carbon emissions than other industries. This is
why Phase 4 focused on building an eco-friendly airport by utilizing renewable
energy. It was important to meet the requirement to earn the best grade in
green construction and meet the mandatory ratio of new and renewable energy.
The mandatory supply of new and renewable energy for Incheon Airport was
more than 34,407,022kWh/yr. IIAC tried to secure solar energy utilizing the
construction structure. The most representative example is the solar energy
generation facilities installed on the soundproof walls of the T1-T2 connecting
road. These not only resolve potential complaints about noise but also secure the
solar energy generation site. It cost about KRW 1.1 billion to install 1,140 solar
modules with a capacity of 415W each. This approach saved a site of 4,700 square
meters and reduced construction costs by about KRW 700 million by utilizing
sound barriers in place of foundation structures.
Solar modules of 4,296.6kW were installed in unused areas in the west of Terminal
1. It applied the dispersed power distribution system with protection equipment in
case of failure. Solar modules were made of low iron glass while the surface was
embossed to minimize the specular reflection. The location, angle, and separation
distance were adjusted for maximum efficiency. Also, solar generation facilities
were installed at the short-term parking lot (1,958.4kW), T2 long-term parking lot
(3,234.0kW), and T2 long-term parking building (283.92kW).
