Making a wider and
cleaner Terminal 2
Drawing the sketch: master plan
baggage handling sys t em The expansion of Terminal 2 is the core part of Incheon
Airport Phase 4 construction project. To become more
competitive as a future hub airport in Northeast Asia, Incheon
Airport needed to increase the passenger capacity of Terminal
2. To this end, IIAC decided to increase the annual passenger
capacity to 52 million during the Phase 4 construction
projects. The most challenging aspect of Terminal 2 expansion
was expanding the terminal while maintaining normal
operations of Terminal 2’s existing facilities. Thus, from the
design competition stage, the company required candidates
to reflect the principle of “non-stop operations” in the design
proposal and construction plan. Under this principle, the
winner was selected in August and the basic design for
Terminal 2 began. This marked the start of the sketching work
for the expansion of Terminal 2.
From the early design phase, the opinions of tenants and
operational departments were actively gathered, and 123
improvements were reflected into the design. Notably, the
Phase 4 construction project adopted building information
modeling (BIM) more extensively, which greatly contributed
to the precise and efficient progress of each process during the
Terminal 2 expansion design.
