Laying the foundations: excavation & piling work
To shorten the construction period, excavation and piling work for Terminal 2’s expansion began in October 2019 even before
the design was completed. IIAC developed an excavation plan in consideration of soil conditions and the locations of existing
structures and various obstructions and selected the retaining wall method. The ground survey revealed that the sub-layer
beneath the reclaimed land was weak, and there was a risk of slope collapse due to pore water and groundwater flow during

slope excavation. Therefore, optimal construction methods were chosen, considering the proximity of other facilities and the
construction site conditions. In areas with structural interference, construction safety was ensured by applying retaining wall
methods (such as cast in-place pile and sheet piles) and ground reinforcement techniques (such as raker and earth anchors).
