Relocating and improving facilities in an airport
that never sleeps
The Phase 4 construction project was divided into 3 categories:
early development, expansion & improvement, and post-
completion facility improvement. By categorizing packages
according to timing and conditions, IIAC sought uninterrupted
airport operations and better construction efficiency. The most
important aspect of the early development project was the
relocation of the departure hall, which required minimizing
interference with existing facilities. Under this principle,
additional check-in counters, self-bag drop kiosks, security
checkpoints, and automated passport control systems were
installed at Terminal 2.
For the expansion & improvement projects, large-scale
relocation and improvement works were carried out across
71 areas, covering about 104,205 square meters, to ensure
the highest service quality and capacity. Cooperation from
various airport stakeholders was crucial as relocating and
improving facilities without interrupting airport operations
was a tall order. In preparation, IIAC held design briefings
and conducted over 100 working-level meetings to develop
detailed schedules for each of the 71 areas. For facilities that
needed to be relocated, alternative facilities were secured, and
relocation plans were drawn up.
