Construction of
control tower and
auxiliary buildings
The construction of auxiliary buildings was divided into
4 packages, covering a total of 61 buildings: 26 buildings,
including the control tower, Integrated Information and
Communication Center, and power building A, 11 buildings
such as airport offices, and 22 buildings for mechanical
and electrical workshops. Among these, the most symbolic
structure was undoubtedly the control tower. The control tower
is an octagonal steel and reinforced concrete structure with one
basement level and 22 above-ground stories.. The upper section
features an octagonal lantern shape, embodying an oriental
charm, while the lower section's upward motion symbolizes a
forward-looking, futuristic design. During the design process,
4 rounds of facade reviews for 11 alternatives were conducted.
The chosen option underwent 2 wind tunnel tests to select
the final design. The focus was also on ensuring safety, with
a reinforced wind-resistant design to withstand magnitude 7
or above earthquakes. Standing at a height of 100.4 meters,
the Incheon Airport control tower was built to ensure safe air
traffic control with no blind spots. At the time, it was the third
tallest control tower in the world, following Malaysia's Kuala
Lumpur Airport and the United States' Denver Airport.
