Preparing the site
Offshore site preparation work
After the initial master plan was approved, the
government held the ground-breaking ceremony for
Incheon Airport on November 12, 1992, taking on
the Phase 1 construction project. Site preparation
was conducted first. Most of the site was prepared by
reclaiming the tidal flats between Yeongjong Island and
Yongyu Island. Next, sea wall construction, dredging,
land reclamation, and ground improvement operations
were conducted to stabilize the ground. Building an
airport on an island in the middle of the sea was not
an easy task. It took more time and effort than general
construction projects, as all materials, manpower, and
equipment had to be transported by sea.
The seawalls served as both a structure for reclamation
and the boundary of the airport site. They were
positioned to maximize the site’s potential for future
expansion, while also considering the overall form of the
site. The dredging and reclamation process minimized
environmental impacts by using a pump dredger to suck
sand and seawater from the surrounding area and then
deposit it in the target area through sand discharge pipes.
