Introduction of state-of-the-art
Baggage Handling System (BHS)
The BHS is a state-of-the-art facility that automatically transports all baggage
to each aircraft quickly and accurately. The detailed design was carried out
by Mannesmann, a German company that had designed BHSs for airports
worldwide, including Frankfurt and Sydney. The BHS installation was a massive
project, involving the laying of more than 750 km of cable and the installation of
thousands of pieces of equipment, along with approximately 21 km of conveyors
throughout the spacious Terminal 1. The installation of the conveyors, in
particular, seemed almost impossible given the extensive piping, air conditioning
ducts, power cables, and communication networks, the largest of their kind in the
country. However, thanks to the dedicated efforts of all involved, the installation
was completed on schedule. From April 2000, commissioning was followed by
acceptance tests starting in July of the same year, with everything successfully
completed by the end of the year.
